To mark the 142nd anniversary of UK–Korea diplomatic relations, 30 of our student council representatives from across all year groups enjoyed a special visit to the British Embassy near Deoksu Palace last Monday. Our students had the opportunity to hear from British Ambassador to South Korea Colin Crooks on the importance of diplomatic relations. As the only ambassador to have served in both North and South Korea, he shared fascinating insights and answered students’ questions in a lively Q&A. Students also gained historical context from Dr Cameron Pyke, Deputy Master (External) at Dulwich College London and currently Head of College at Dulwich College Beijing, who spoke about the early pioneers and exchanges that shaped UK–Korea relations. Our Head of College, Alison Derbyshire discussed how the partnership further enables collaboration in global education and helps students become true connectors of the world. The event was also attended by students from Deoksung Girls’ Middle School as part of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOE) International Student Exchange Programme. And what is an afternoon without tea and scone? The students savoured treats while overlooking the serene garden views of the historic residence as they wrapped up the event. Last week, some of our Year 3 children created small Christmas party bags for the children we support through the Open Arms Welfare Home charity. This thoughtful activity encouraged them to reflect on family, gratitude, and the support they receive at home. They took great care decorating each bag and choosing what to include, and these gifts will be delivered during this weekend’s regular volunteer visit to the Welfare Home. This truly highlights the kind and caring community we have here at Dulwich College Seoul. Kudos to our Year 3 students for this lovely act of service learning!

Baubles of Joy brought our whole school together this year, with every year group—from DUCKS to IB—creating their own festive bauble to transform our foyer into a colourful winter display. Each group added something unique: DUCKS handprint baubles, Years 3–6 personalised and wrapped designs (some even using recycled school uniforms), Years 7–9 contributed intricate Posca patterns and supported the wreath and Advent Calendar, and our older students created larger, creative house-themed pieces. Sustainability was at the heart of the project. Many baubles were upcycled or repurposed, decorated with materials like old uniforms and paper snowflakes made from rescued books. What could have been waste became something beautiful. In January, every bauble will be returned to students to take home, helping this tradition continue beyond school and into their families’ celebrations. We look forward to building on this joyful and sustainable tradition again next year.

As we wrap up November, here is something to reflect on. Our students took part in the No Carbon November Challenge and explored how small daily actions can make a big impact. Our Social Media Club ECA reviewed the Daily Actions chart, discussed the habits they already practise and created reflections, posters and visuals to promote sustainable choices. From using tumblers and reducing single-use plastics to saving energy at home, our students showed that sustainability can be part of everyday life. We have compiled their reflections, photos and designs into a short article that highlights their efforts and celebrates how our community continues to live more sustainably beyond November. After weeks of planning and designing their own investigations, students spent two full days in the lab exploring research linked to this year’s theme: Oceans. From Getting to the Bottom of Bikini Bottom to How pH and temperature affect calcium carbonate crystallisation, groups took on ambitious scientific questions, testing variables, analysing results, and putting their interdisciplinary skills into action. The week concluded with a CSP Exhibition in the IB Centre, where teams showcased their experiments and presented their findings to peers, teachers, and staff. Our Year 10 GCSE Art students explored Vanitas Still Life, a genre rich with symbolism about time, impermanence, and the fleeting nature of life. Students created their own still life setups using meaningful objects, adding a creative twist by blowing bubbles across their arrangements to represent fragility and the ephemeral. On Monday, our students wore bright and odd socks to show that kindness, respect, and inclusion matter at DCSL. It sparked meaningful conversations about what bullying is, why it happens, and how we can all work together to create a safe and caring school community. Thank you to everyone who took part and helped us “sock it to the bullies” by celebrating individuality and kindness.

Our Year 9 students recently took part in an inspiring workshop with the Oppidan team as part of the Dulwich Difference Mentoring Initiative. This is our cross-school programme linking Year 9 mentors with Year 6 mentees. During the session, students explored what makes an effective mentor, how to communicate with empathy and clarity, and the importance of positive role modelling. The level of engagement throughout the training was fantastic, with students contributing thoughtful ideas and demonstrating a real understanding of the qualities that make a great mentor. They learnt a great deal from the session and shared some excellent responses, showing maturity and enthusiasm for supporting their younger peers. The Dulwich Difference Mentoring Initiative is a high-quality provision designed to promote readiness, oracy, and character development. Delivered in person, it integrates seamlessly across both the primary and secondary schools at Dulwich, helping students build confidence, leadership, and meaningful connections within our community. @oppidaneducation.korea @oppidaneducation

Today we commemorate Remembrance Day. Our Art Department led a beautiful tribute featuring wreaths of flowers created by Little Picassos and Middle School students (Years 7 to 9), inspired by this year’s focus artist Nanan Kang. Each poppy colour carries a special meaning: red for remembrance, purple for animals who served, black for communities who lost their lives, and white for peace. Students also honoured the victims of the Itaewon tragedy by painting purple and white chrysanthemums, symbolising reflection and compassion. You can read more about this on MyDulwich. This is one of the ways our school is marking Remembrance Day. Stay tuned for more.

At Dulwich College Seoul, we regularly seek feedback from parents on all aspects of school life. Each suggestion helps us reflect on how we could enhance the experience for our families, whether through improved communication, greater convenience, or additional transparency. Following feedback from several parents about our school lunches, we recognised that many wished to see not only photos of that day’s meals but also an overview of recent menus. We understood that parents are busy and may miss seeing the menus daily, and they were previously able to view old menus on our Instagram account that has been transitioned to the MyDulwich page. Understanding the importance of knowing what our students are enjoying each day, we explored ways to make this information more accessible. We are pleased to introduce a new Lunch Menu Archive on MyDulwich. Under College Services → School Lunch, families can now view photos and details from up to two weeks of past meals. This feature allows parents to stay informed about the variety and quality of food served, as well as appreciate the balance and thought behind our meal planning. We are grateful to our parent community for sharing ideas that help us continually improve MyDulwich and strengthen communication across the College. Stay tuned for more enhancements as part of our ongoing We Listened and Delivered series.

This week, our Social Media Club ECA students took charge again with the interview and copywriting. This time, the students had a go at editing the videos themselves. Every session they are improving and using new skills. Kudos to Irene K and Exuan Y for the brilliant interview. And well done to Jimin Y and Jun Y for this blurb below: As the members of the Social Media ECA, we’ve decided to celebrate Mental Health Day by going around the school and interviewing the students on different aspects of the day. We asked questions such as “How do you feel about mental health awareness,” “What do you think about wearing pastel colors tomorrow,” “What comes to your mind when you hear the word mental health,” and “What do you know about Mental Health Day.” We think mental health is important, and we thought it was significant to hear the voices of everyone in this school, including those who are usually not represented. This allowed us to understand the school even on a smaller scale. We also wanted to know if Mental Health Day had significant effects on the representation of people with mental health disorders. It made us wonder if wearing pastel-colored clothes helps people reflect on the seriousness of Mental Health Day. What a team! On Tuesday 23 September, Dulwich College Seoul welcomed twenty Year 9 students to join twenty 2nd-grade students from Sinbanpo Middle School for an international joint class held in the rooftop garden above the swimming pool. Led by our Head of Outdoor Education, Mark Lovett, the session focused on the theme “Survival Skills.” Students began with icebreaker activities before dividing into five mixed groups to take part in the programme. Working together, they learned how to use a flint and steel to create sparks and use cotton wool to bring that spark to a flame to start a fire. They also explored how to split wood into tinder, kindling, and fuel to turn that small spark into a larger fire suitable for cooking. Having already identified the essential survival needs of water, shelter, and food, students then applied their new skills to make s’mores using marshmallows and chocolate biscuits, which they shared among the groups. The class lasted around 1 hour and 20 minutes, and the atmosphere was energetic and engaging throughout. Many students expressed disappointment when it came time to finish, a clear reflection of how much they enjoyed the collaborative and hands-on learning experience.

At Dulwich College Seoul, listening to our community's feedback is of paramount importance to us. In our most recent parent (and student) survey, many of you asked for opportunities to expand and diversify our Extra-Curricular Activities (ECAs). We have listened and acted on this feedback - and we are proud to share that this term, we are delivering our largest ever ECA programme, including many student-led ECAs. Across the College, we now offer 13 Lunchtime ECAs and an unprecedented 101 Primary and Senior School ECAs. Sign-ups have doubled compared to last year, showing the strong enthusiasm from students to take part in these expanded opportunities tailored to their interests. Among the exciting new Primary School ECAs this term are the Hairstyling Club, Diary Decorating Club, and Rattan Craft ECA, which are already proving popular with our younger students who love learning practical and creative skills. In the Senior School, we are also proud to celebrate a record number of student-led ECAs. From Robotics and Science Crest to the School Newspaper and New Global Normal Club, these initiatives empower our students to take ownership of their learning, build leadership skills, and inspire their peers. As one student ECA leader shared: “Through my experience running ECAs, I’ve built great friendships across year groups, whether in the swing of jazz or in solving a tricky math problem.” - Senior School Student Mr Mark Lovett, Head of Outdoor Education and Enrichment (PS & SS ECAs), highlighted the impact of these improvements: “We’ve worked hard to expand the range and quality of ECAs this year, guided by the valuable feedback from parents. It’s been great to see students exploring new opportunities, developing skills, and finding activities they genuinely enjoy.” – Mr Lovett Together, these new and expanded ECAs enrich daily school life and promote our values, providing memorable experiences that foster confidence, creativity, teamwork, and community. We are delighted that our students now have more pathways than ever to explore their passions. Thank you to our parents for your valuable feedback, which continues to shape and strengthen our vibrant programme. A special thanks goes to our Social Media Club ECA students, whose photographs in this article showcase the energy and diversity of our programme. We continue to encourage our students to initiate new ECAs to lead every term and look forward to seeing more students engaged in our many offerings! This is just the beginning. In the weeks ahead, we will be sharing more updates on other areas of improvement across the College, all guided by feedback from our annual survey.
